Ce texte présente le cadre contextuel, conceptuel et méthodologique d’une étude portant sur l’imaginaire géographique brésilien à l’égard de l’espace francophone mondial. L’étude vise une population que l’on nomme « francotrope », c’est-à-dire des personnes n’ayant pas le français comme langue maternelle, mais qui se sont approprié cette langue ou pourraient le faire dans l’avenir. Notre intérêt pour l’imaginaire géographique des francotropes brésiliens est double. D’une part, il s’agit d’évaluer la place qu’y occupent respectivement le Québec – seule province majoritairement francophone du Canada – et les autres communautés francophones au pays, ces dernières se trouvant toutes en situation minoritaire. D’autre part, on cherche à comprendre le rôle que cet imaginaire géographique joue dans la distribution asymétrique des populations latino-américaines qui immigrent au Canada et qui ont une bonne maîtrise du français, lesquelles préfèrent très largement le Québec aux autres communautés francophones. On soupçonne que ces dernières sont très peu présentes dans l’imaginaire géographique brésilien.
