Abstract

In this study, the effect of DC discharge plasma on small-scale supersonic flow was experimentally investigated. A discharge was generated on the wall near the nozzle exit of a supersonic jet generated by a small Laval nozzle, generating plasma, and the effect of the DC discharge plasma on the jet field was investigated by visualizing the jet field using the Schlieren method and measuring the total pressure distribution. As a result, no significant changes in the jet were observed when the jet field was visualized using the Schlieren method, but the upper jet boundary angle tended to become smaller when the discharge was on the upper side and larger when the discharge was on the lower side. The jet boundary angle on the lower wall side during under expansion decreased as the set current increased, reached a minimum when the set current was 600 mA, and tended to increase when the set current was 840 mA. In addition, no significant changes in the total pressure distribution were observed, but the total pressure in the center of the jet tended to decrease by about 1.0 kPa. From the above, it can be concluded that a power consumption of 225 W does not lead to active control of the supersonic jet field.
