Little is known about the chewing louse community of ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) chicks, or about the effects of the lice on that species. Chewing lice are relatively benign parasites but they can have a detrimental effect on their host, largely by decreasing feather mass, which can increase metabolic rate and thermal conductance. l investigated the effects of chewing lice on ring-billed gull chicks by testing for a relationship between louse load and stress and between louse load and cell-mediated immunnocompetence. To assess stress level I determined heterophil:lymphocyte ratios. I assessed cell-mediated immune response by performing PHA skin tests. Louse loads were found by dust-ruffling the chicks. Total louse load was not related to either stress or cell-mediated immune response. Three species of chewing lice were found on the chicks and lice were removed from approximately 97% of the chicks. Common tems (Sterna hirundo) are long-lived seabirds that can permanently abandon breeding nests, and even chicks, when disturbed. I investigated whether or not a fireworks display in Charlottetown Harbor was disturbing a nearby common tern colony and causing reproductive failure. I monitored feeding rate and panic flight rate in the pre-fireworks and post-fireworks period and did not find any significant change in behavior. The terns did not abandon and there was reproductive success.
