Abstract
Economic globalization is a driving force shaping modern society. The homogenization of business, and the power and influence that business subsequently acquires, change the cultural, political, and biological composition of the Earth. In both natural and anthropogenic systems, the current direction of globalization fundamentally shifts the processes and priorities away from sustainability. The inhabitants of this planet find themselves in the midst of a global crisis, political, economic, social, and environmental in nature, which is driven by globalization. The ecosystems that sustain life on Earth are not able to meet the perpetually increasing demands of a globalized economy. As a product of globalization, habitat is lost, ecosystems are polluted, and genetic information is permanently modified. Protected areas are established with the goal of maintaining ecological integrity and creating spaces where natural and not anthropogenic forces dominate. Globalization and its effects on the environment present protected areas with challenges that they may not be able to overcome. If protected areas are managed in the isolated, crisis-oriented manner that has become the norm, globalization will render them obsolete. The management of protected areas must adopt holistic, creative, and adaptive methods of existing within their matrix landscape if they are to survive. Canada's national park system represents the country's best-developed and comprehensive protected area network. The national park system and the Parks Canada Agency provide an effective study focus to examine the effects of economic globalization on the ecological integrity of protected areas.
