Abstract
The present paper delves into the analysis of the complex interplay of trauma, memory, and identity in Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner”, centering on the psychological and emotional development of the protagonist, Amir. The novel explores how a single traumatic event—Amir's witnessing of Hassan's assault and his subsequent silence—becomes a defining moment that shapes his identity and influences his relationships, especially with Baba and Hassan. Using a psychoanalytic framework, this study investigates how trauma manifests through memory and how these memories govern Amir’s sense of self and moral agency. Departing from traditional trauma theory, which often centers on repetition, repression, and psychological dysfunction, this research interprets the characters’ silence and emotional restraint as acts of resistance rather than failures to process trauma. The paper places “The Kite Runner” within a broader context of recovery and resilience, proposing that Amir's journey reflects not only a desire for redemption, but also an effort to reclaim and reconstruct his splintered identity. Marked by war, displacement, and cultural upheaval, the novel delineates how memory can both haunt and heal.
