Ce bref article vise à donner un aperçu des motifs ornementaux non-figurés présents dans la technique de production attique de vases à figures noires de la collection du Musée royal de l’Ontario, Toronto, Canada. Ces motifs sont des formes stylisées et géométriques dont la thématique peut être végétale ou florale ; ou encore, composée de combinaison de formes géométriques « pures », c’est-à-dire ; des traits ou lignes verticales et horizontales parallèles ou entrecroisées. La majorité de ces éléments du décor trouve ses origines et son développement dans la Grèce de la Période Géométrique (entre 900-700 av. J.-C environ). L’objectif de cette brève discussion vise, d’un côté, à mettre l’accent sur les éléments iconographiques de « permanence », de « continuité » qui représentent une certaine « tradition Géométrique », même si ces motifs sont adaptés à une nouvelle forme de vase et technique et à un nouveau style, dans ce cas, la céramique à figures noires ; et, de l’autre, vise à discuter les « nouveaux » motifs, incorporés comme standards de la composition du décor de ce nouveau style.
