Le 2 avril 2005, lors du colloque du cinquantenaire de la Société d’études ardennaises, François-Joseph Ruggiu proposait une communication intitulée Pour une histoire de Charleville et de sa population sous l’Ancien Régime. Il venait d’ouvrir un champ d’études et de sources inédites dont personne ne soupçonnait alors l’importance et les multiples dimensions historiques qui allaient en découler. En décembre 2010, un premier colloque intitulé Charleville, une ville neuve et sa population s’est tenu pour mettre en lumière l’histoire de la population de Charleville et ces sources exceptionnelles, en France et en Europe, que sont les dénombrements annuels de population de la ville. Les 28 et 29 mai 2021, un second rendez-vous scientifique international aura pour but de proposer un nouveau point d’étape sur ce projet et de mettre en lumière les travaux innovants qui se focalisent actuellement sur l’histoire de la cité ardennaise, dans une perspective de longue durée et à travers de multiples domaines de recherche.
