Le 2 avril 2005, lors du colloque du cinquantenaire de la Socit d'tudes ardennaises, Franois-Joseph Ruggiu proposait une communication intitule Pour une histoire de Charleville et de sa population sous l'Ancien Rgime.Il venait d'ouvrir un champ d'tudes et de sources indites dont personne ne souponnait alors l'importance et les multiples dimensions historiques qui allaient en dcouler.En dcembre 2010, un premier colloque intitul Charleville, une ville neuve et sa population s'est tenu pour mettre en lumire l'histoire de la population de Charleville et ces sources exceptionnelles, en France et en Europe, que sont les dnombrements annuels de population de la ville.Les 28 et 29 mai 2021, un second rendez-vous scientifique international, organis par le Centre Roland Mousnier de Sorbonne-Universit, l'Universit d'Artois, le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique et la Socit d'Histoire des Ardennes, aura pour but de proposer un nouveau point d'tape sur ce projet et de mettre en lumire les travaux innovants qui se focalisent actuellement sur l'histoire de la cit ardennaise, dans une perspective de longue dure et travers de multiples domaines de recherche.Il s'agira galement de mettre en valeur et d'exploiter des sources qui, pour tre disperses dans diffrents fonds d'archives europens, n'en ont pas moins trait l'histoire de la cit et de son fondateur.Cette rencontre est ouverte aux chercheurs de tous horizons, professionnels et amateurs, dbutants et confirms, les carolomacriens et les autres.
