Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The role of exchange rate fluctuation on the pricing behavior of Canadian canola exporters to Japan, Mexico, and the U.S. is examined using a model identifying noncompetitive and exchange rate related pricing behavior. Price discrimination was identified for Canadian canola exports to the three destinations over the period of 1993–99. Results also suggest that Pricing to Market strategies were employed for Japanese imports. Canadian canola exporters used local currency price stabilization to dampen the effects of relative price changes in the Japanese currency, perhaps linked to the large size of Japanese imports relative to Mexico and the U.S. The Canadian agrifood industry, with its long tradition of international trade, has faced substantial changes in exchange rate vari-ability in recent years. Whereas the overall trade effect of exchange rate changes can be complicated by the depreciating Canadian dollar’s impact on macroeconomic perfor-mance (Coleman and Meilke), the declining U.S./Canada exchange rate generally encour-ages U.S. imports of Canadian goods. With-out adjusting the change, depreciation of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. currency makes the purchase of Canadian commodities more attractive to U.S. buy-ers. Because many foreign agricultural com-modity transactions are denominated in a common currency (Pick and Carter), and because U.S. dollar dominates numerous world markets, Canadian currency deprecia-tion relative to the U.S. dollar may further strengthen Canada’s export position world-wide. However, Canadian exporters may react to exchange rate fluctuation, making their pricing decision based on such factors as the importing country, whether the varia-tion is considered permanent or temporary,

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
