Cet article repère dans un premier temps l’usage du mot « roman » dans les Confessions de Rousseau. De là, il s’agit de comparer le sens du « roman », du côté des mémoires de J. W. von Goethe ( Poésie et vérité ), d’une part, et d’autre part, du côté de l’oeuvre de Freud, au moment précis où il s’occupe du cas de l’homme aux rats, encore aujourd’hui considéré comme un cas paradigmatique pour l’intelligence de la névrose obsessionnelle. Il ressort de ces différents recoupements que Freud fait un usage du mot « roman » tout à fait comparable à l’usage qu’en font Rousseau et Goethe ; et ce, alors que la conception d’un roman intérieur , le roman que l’on se fait à soi-même, brouille la distinction classique entre pensée raisonnante et pensée fantasmatique. Dès lors, de Rousseau à Freud, de Goethe à l’homme aux rats, pensée raisonnante et pensée fantasmatique se relaient dans un espace qu’il faut bien appeler l’espace d’une intériorité subjective où se jouent le drame de la conscience, la hantise de la faute et l’attrait de la tentation. Sur ce point, cet article propose d’examiner une intuition nouvelle, en considérant le texte que Freud a consacré à l’homme aux rats parmi les textes majeurs pour penser les rapports entre psychanalyse et littérature.
