Como en la mayor parte de los diálogos platónicos, y sobre todo en los de corte ético-político, en el Alcibíades I arribamos a la conclusión de que para participar en la vida pública y aconsejar en materia política hay que conocer previamente qué es lo justo y lo injusto, lo cual solo puede alcanzarse a partir del reconocimiento de la propia ignorancia respecto de ello. Pero en el encuentro dialógico que sostiene con Sócrates, el joven y arrogante Alcibíades encarna lo postura contraria –que es, por lo general, la asumida por los jóvenes interlocutores del filósofo–, dado que es alguien que afirma estar dispuesto a comparecer ante la Asamblea ateniense como un “buen consejero” (agathòs sýmboulos: Alcibíades I, 106d2; 107c5) sobre temas referentes a la guerra, la paz o a cualquier otro asunto propio de la ciudad sobreel que los atenienses se propongan deliberar, pero sin conocer realmente tales temas. Eso explica las respuestas contradictorias de Alcibíades sobre todos los asuntos acerca de los cuales Sócrates lo interroga en el transcurso del diálogo (lo justo y lo injusto, lo bello y lo vergonzoso, lo conveniente y lo no conveniente, entre otros). Tales contradicciones ponen en evidencia la volatilidad de las dóxai de Alcibíades (“cuando alguien no sabe, necesariamente su alma cambia de opinión en ese tema”: Alcibíades I, 117b2-3), por contraposición al grado de firmeza y fundamentación epistémica que para Sócrates detenta el consejo del que realmente conoce bien respecto del tema sobre el que se aconseja.
