Cette recherche cherche à illustrer les stéréotypes associés à la notion de « gamers » et à présenter comment ils sont perçus et mobilisés chez les jeunes adultes joueurs de jeux vidéo au Québec. Dans une démarche d’étude de cas, nous avons mené plusieurs séances d’observation participantes dans des club de jeux vidéo et de jeux de table dans différents collèges d’enseignement général et professionnel (cégep) et mené des entretiens semi-dirigés et des activités de phénoménographies avec treize participants. Nous avons ainsi pu établir un lien, d’une part, entre la manière dont ces jeunes gens ont l’impression d’être perçus et la manière dont les « gamers » sont représentés dans les médias de divertissement et, d’autre part, entre les stigmates dont ils se sentent accablés et le traitement médiatique du jeu vidéo et, par extenso, des joueurs. Le jeu vidéo est un média bien implanté au Québec tant culturellement qu’économiquement. Il est pourtant l’objet de plusieurs paniques morales. Dans un premier temps, nous avons étudié la manière dont l’imaginaire issu de ces périodes de contestations se retrouve dans l’imaginaire des « gamers » : comment est-ce qu’il est mobilisé par ces derniers, quels éléments les impactent davantage et comment ils en font sens. Enfin, dans un second temps, nous avons étudié la manière dont ces jeunes joueurs se représentent ce que signifie être un « gamer » : l’illustration d’un contre-imaginaire radical et la présentation des différentes formes identitaires que peut prendre cette appellation.
