Abstract

This article proposes an epistemological foundation for the emerging scientific methods of the first quarter of the 21st century applied in three interdisciplinary fields: Complexity Sciences, Cognitive Sciences, and Cybernetic Sciences. It argues that traditional methods—empirical-experimental, empirical-interpretive, and logical-deductive—are insufficient to address phenomena characterized by emergence, recursion, multiscale behavior, adaptation, and observer dependence. Three autonomous methods are identified: (1) the method of emergence and self-organization; (2) the mind-body-symbol correlational method; and (3) the circular method of adaptive feedback. Based on these, a framework of six scientific families is proposed, laying the groundwork for a Periodic Table of Methods.
