From its early development, catalyzed by mass displacement and forced relocation of Melanesian people, Tok Pisin has flourished into a thriving language of mixed origins in Papua New Guinea. This paper, which has emerged from thesis research focusing on the semantic domain of war and violence in Tok Pisin, presents a semantic analysis of the words pait (Engl. “fight”) and paitim (Engl. “to fight”, intransitive). The paper’s methodology combines three complementary approaches within the theoretical framework of Cognitive Linguistics. The first approach is adapted etymological tracing for composite languages (Mühlhäusler 1984), which is used to reconstruct the historical development of pait/paitim. This approach accounts for phonological, semantic, and structural blending and investigating the idea of pait evolving from paronyms. The second approach consists of applying semantic analysis grounded in Cognitive Semantics to classify changes and identify how meaning extensions emerge through conceptual associations. In fact, previous research suggests that much of the growth in Tok Pisin’s vocabulary is driven by cognitively motivated meaning extensions (Snoek 2007); this study refines that claim through detailed analysis of pait and paitim. The third approach integrates corpus linguistics methods, using concordance tools such as AntConc and visualisation tools like Voyant to examine usage patterns in the Slone Corpus (Sloan 2001) of traditional Tok Pisin folktales from 1972–1997 in Wantok Newspaper and compare them with dictionary data from Mihalic (1971). Together, these approaches reveal how pait and paitim have evolved into contextually specific meanings reflecting Tok Pisin’s sociocultural environment. Ultimately, this project contributes to etymological studies for contact languages and cognitive semantics by modelling how lexical meaning develops, stabilizes and grows within a mixed language. ______________________ Mihalic, f. 1974.
