Abstract
This report describes a programme of archaeological building recording of the former Kangaroo Works, Wellington Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The work was commissioned by Hammerson UK Properties plc in advance of the Sevenstone development, formally known as the New Retail Quarter (NRQ). Fieldwork was undertaken by ARCUS in October 2007. Final report edits have been completed by Wessex Archaeology on behalf of The University of Sheffield. Previous archaeological work undertaken regarding the site includes an archaeological desk-based assessment of land and buildings within the proposed New Retail Quarter, a detailed archive assessment for the proposed New Retail Quarter, and a historic building assessment. The Kangaroo Works was constructed between c.1895-1896 as an extension to the adjacent larger works complex of the Trafalgar Grinding Wheel. The works replaced a former reservoir and originally housed a forge on the ground floor with warehouse space situated on the floors above. The works was built and owned by R. Sorby and Sons who were a renowned manufacturer of edge tools. The building had remained largely unaltered since its construction, despite the demolition of the attached Trafalgar Grinding Wheel in the 1980s and the numerous occupants of the building since 1967. However, the forge on the ground floor had been removed with little evidence retained at the time of survey. Kangaroo Works was unusual in architectural style for the period, whilst the positioning of a forge within a principal range was also rare. However, aspects of the layout of the building were conventional, such as the positioning of the cart passage, an enclosed rear yard and generous fenestration throughout. The structure was part steel framed and had cast iron columns/flues on the ground floor which not only functioned structurally but also as flues for the forge.
