Petrographic and chemical variations through the Goldenville and Halifax formations, Bear River, High Head, and Broad River sections, southwestern Nova Scotia

Abstract
Three stratigraphic sections through the Goldenville and Halifax formations in the Meguma terrane of southern Nova Scotia were sampled for petrographic and major and trace element chemical studies in order to look for stratigraphic or regional variations, and to assess their provenance and environment of deposition. The Bear River, High Head, and Broad River sections combined include about 8000 m of stratigraphic thickness, and record sediment deposition over a period of about 50 million years from the Late Neoproterozoic through to the Early Ordovician. All three sections consist of mainly psammitic rocks in the Goldenville Formation and mainly pelitic rocks in the overlying Halifax Formation. The protoliths of the psammitic rocks were quartz wackes with matrix component between 5% and 30%. More pelitic rocks contain between about 25% and 55% quartz. The pelitic rocks have a higher volatile component than the psammitic rocks, and samples from the low-grade (greenschist-facies) Bear River and High Head sections have a higher volatile content than those from the higher metamorphic grade (amphibolite-facies) Broad River section. Major and trace element compositions do not show any consistent variations with stratigraphy or among the sections, although the Broad River section tends to be more bimodal and the Bear River section contains psammitic rocks with less quartz and SiO₂ than the other sections. Discrimination diagrams for tectonic setting based on chemical parameters suggest that the sediments were deposited in an active arc or continental margin setting, but the lack of feldspar and lithic clasts suggests a cratonic source area.
