Population characteristics of striped bass during the summer in the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia and the practicality of creel census for fish sampling

Abstract
Striped bass migrate extensively along the coast of eastern North America from North Carolina to the Bay of Fundy. Bass support a large angling fishery both in Canada and the United States. A local breeding population of striped bass is found in the Shubenacadie River, Nova Scotia, and previous research indicates that bass migrating northwards from the USA mix with those of Canadian stocks. Low stock levels of Canadian bass have been a concem since the late 1800s, however, it is believed the extent of northern striped bass stock depletion may be masked by the influx of American fish. Bass were sampled from three locations in the Basin; Five Islands, Portapique and the Southern Bight, to investigate their movement during summer and examine their population characteristics. Total of 101 bass were sampled, 13 from Five Islands, 32 in Portapique and 56 from the Southern Bight. Bass taken at each location were measured for fork length, weighed and aged. Twelve of the bass from Five Islands were tagged with spaghetti tags, in anticipation that future recaptures would assist in identification of their stock origin. Bass from Five Islands had a mean length of 49.8 cm and mean age of 5.8 yr, Portapique, 29.1 cm and 2.8 yr and the Southern Bight, 36.3 cm and 3.5 yr. To date there have been no tag returns. Interaction with local anglers on the Wolfville shore of the Southern Bight during a creel census indicated that further sampling and tagging efforts by the anglers themselves is a distinct possibility. These data will also be useful in the overall assessment of the potential impact of future tidal power development on fishes in the Bay of Fundy.
