A comprehensive examination of the history of the Acadia University Biology Honours Program

Abstract
The Acadia Biology Honours Program has been in existence for 95 years, but how many honours students have there been and what have these students done after completing their bachelor degree? These are just some of the questions that this study attempted to answer. Through an analysis of alumni records, contact with honours supervisors, and through personal communication with past Honours Students, over 90% of these students have been located. In total, there have been 690 students that have graduated with Biology honours, dating back to 1915, Each successive decade has seen a steady rise in the number of Honours Students, and an overall increase in the proportion of Acadia graduates that have been Biology Honours Students. These students have been supervised by a total of 72 supervisors both within and outside the Biology Department and 56.5% of all past honours students have been female. From the limited records concerning GPA (from 2002 until present), Biology Honours Students have obtained GPAs 0.54 higher than those students graduating with majors in Biology. Entering Acadia University, 95.5% of past Biology Honours Students were from Canada (75.4% of Canadian students were from the Maritimes). Currently, 82.6% live in Canada and 42.2% of past honours students living in Canada are living in the Maritimes. Of all past Acadia Biology Honours Students, 84.9% have gone on to obtain post-undergraduate education, 60.6% of whom have obtained Doctoral degrees. There have been a total of ten different types of Doctoral degrees obtained by Acadia Biology Honours Students, with the overwhelming majority being Ph. D. (45.1%) and M. D. degrees (44.5%). This study has served to not only illustrate the roots of the Biology Honours Program, but also gain an appreciation of the magnitude of success that Acadia graduates have earned.
