Associations between assemblages of juvenile fish and coastal habitats classified by substrate type in Nova Scotia

Abstract
The utilization of different habitat types by assemblages of juvenile fish, and their association with various habitats, along the inshore coast of Nova Scotia was examined. The main goals were to establish effective and reproducible techniques that can be used in further work to assess the significance and roles of inshore habitats for marine conservation. Fish collection was accomplished through the use of a 10m beach seine. A maximum of five replicate seine hauls were taken at each of the 22 sites selected around the province. Sites were visited a total of three times throughout the summer of 2005. Unidentified species were preserved and later identified using species identification of keys. Substrate samples were collected from each site and analyzed for particle size spectrum and organic matter content. It was found that qualitative habitat descriptions were subjective, but provide a better indication of site habitat types based on substrate. Also habitats with smaller particle sizes were found to be associated with larger fish abundances and larger numbers of species. Analysis of variance tests identified relationships between the number of species at the seine level for mid summer, the diversity by collection date, and diversity at the seine level in late summer with respect to habitat types. Further analyses using simultaneous comparisons tests revealed significant differences in particular habitat types associated with the number of species and diversity at the seine level. This study provides the groundwork for the selection of candidate areas for marine conservation of the nearshore coastal regions of Nova Scotia.
