Sediment mobility and sand bar dynamics on the Schubenacadie River, Nova Scotia

Abstract
This thesis study examines the effects of tidal influence on the distribution and movement of sediment on a sandbar in the Shubenacadie River, Nova Scotia. The sandbars of the river contain large concentrations of heavy mineral sands and their economic potential is being actively investigated by Titanium Corporation Inc. of Toronto. The large tidal range of the Shubenacadie River poses challenges in determining the locations of the heavy mineral concentrations. A series of tests were carried out to understand the nature of movement of sediment on the bar. Using a combination of bar outline mapping, ripple mapping, and erosion and deposition tests, correlations were made between tidal range and the sediment movement on the sandbar. All tests indicated that the most dynamic environment was over the swept megaripple on the west side of the sandbar. In addition, the largest tidal ranges caused higher amounts of erosion and deposition. In the water column, a set of vertically arranged samples were collected during a flood tide. The samples all had extremely high concentrations of sediment, but these concentrations generally decreased with height above the bed. In addition, magnetic fractions of the sediment were more abundant than expected, compared to ideal mathematical models for entrainment and settling velocity. These sediment studies indicate that the bar is a highly dynamic environment. Nevertheless, the dynamic nature exhibits some consistencies within the various regions. Specifically, the highest concentrations of heavy minerals are found in the region of the bar that had the most erosion and deposition.
