En Dinamarca, recientemente, se han hecho esfuerzos por recordar a los daneses su pasado colonial en el Caribe, África Occidental, India y Groenlandia. Hasta ahora ha habido escaso reconocimiento formal de los daños y violación de derechos a los habitantes de sus colonias. Excepcionalmente, un caso ha trascendido: la violación de derechos humanos de niños groenlandeses Inuit al separarlos de sus familias bajo la política de los años 50, que buscaba la asimilación su forzosa. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial el gobierno danés puso en marcha planes para experimentar con un grupo selecto de escolares que fueron enviados a Dinamarca para aprender la cultura y la lengua danesas. El resultado fue muy negativo, y el suceso se considera un secuestro estatal y un momento oscuro de la colonización danesa. Aunque Groenlandia dejó de ser una colonia después de 1953, este experimento de comportamiento colonial. El hecho ocurre en la fase de descolonización de Groenlandia, bajo la supervisión de la ONU y con la intervención de las organizaciones Save the Children y Cruz Roja. La Primera Ministra danesa (Mette Frederiksen) reconoció oficialmente en 2022 a este grupo groenlandeses la violación de sus derechos en su infancia.
