Après une étude des représentations de la pauvreté à travers les photographies du Peuple de l’abîme de Jack London effectuée en 2020, ce mémoire de recherche de deuxième année de master vise à explorer d’autres registres photographiques produits par l’écrivain. Ayant pour base l’ouvrage de Jeanne Campbell Reesman publié en 2010 sur la pratique photographique de London, cette étude également comme sources les albums de celui-ci conservés à la Huntington Library, ainsi que les archives des journaux et magazines américains tels que le San Francisco Examiner, le Pacific Monthlyou encore le Collier’s Weekly. Ce mémoire tend à remettre en contexte les photographies de London publiées dans ses articles publiés dans la presse lors de différents évènements. En effet, l’écrivain se révèle aussi bien dans le reportage de guerre lors du conflit russo-japonais, en tant que témoin du tremblement de terre de San Francisco ou que dans le récit de voyage entre 1907 et 1908 à bord du Snark. Entre la découverte de pays lointains qui conduisent son esprit d’écrivain et sa sensibilité à la pratique de la photographie, le corpus d’images choisit révèle une production touchant de nombreuses thématiques. La culture picturale héritée du 19e siècle devient une source de motifs et d’iconographie dans laquelle les photographes de son milieu vont continuer à se plonger. Ce mémoire, entre texte et photographie, tente d’appréhender cette relation au sein de ce même support qu’est la presse écrite, afin de situer la production inédite de Jack London.
