Le diisocyanate de toluène (TDI) est considéré comme un irritant (cutané, oculaire et respiratoire) et un sensibilisant asthmatique. Il est utilisé dans la fabrication de matériaux en polyuréthane tels que les mousses flexibles. L’utilisation des isocyanates peut mener à des expositions par inhalation et/ou par contact cutané. Les isocyanates sont reconnus comme une cause de l’asthme professionnel. L’American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) recommande pour le TDI une valeur limite d’exposition dans l’air de 1 partie par milliard (ppb) avec notation inhalable fraction and vapor (IFV). Cette notation signifie que la fraction inhalable des particules et la phase vapeur du TDI doivent être prises en considération dans la mesure de l’exposition rendant les méthodes actuelles inadéquates. Les méthodes d’évaluation utilisées doivent donc être conformes à la nouvelle valeur limite d’exposition qui a été mise en vigueur au Québec en février 2024 ainsi qu’à la notation IFV. Dans ce contexte, des travaux ont été réalisés à l’IRSST pour développer une méthode d’analyse tenant compte du caractère semi-volatil de la substance à mesurer et conforment à la notation IFV. Le développement analytique a consisté à l’analyse instrumentale par chromatographie à phase liquide couplé à la spectrométrie de masse (LC-MS), à l’étude d’un nouveau dispositif d’échantillonnage, à l’adaptation d’une cassette IOM imprégnée de 1-(2-méthoxyphényl)pipérazine, à la conservation des échantillons et plus particulièrement à l’inclusion des aérosols ayant potentiellement adhéré sur les parois internes de la cassette IOM. La méthode et le nouveau dispositif d’échantillonnage développés ont enfin été comparés avec la méthode OSHA 5002 et la méthode ISO 17734-1 avec le ASSETTM EZ4-NCO sampler de Supelco par des générations d’atmosphères d’aérosols et de vapeurs de TDI en laboratoire ainsi qu’en situation réelle dans des usines de fabrication de polyuréthane à base de TDI. _____________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Diisocyanate, Diisocyanate de toluène, IOM, IFV, Prélèvement air
