Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Canadian Schools of Nursing are required to incorporate the concepts of cultural competence and cultural safety into curricula 1. Standard 4 Key Element 14 states: For Canadian Schools of Nursing: The curriculum implements Action 24 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) call to programs of nursing to integrate the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, human rights, the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, Indigenous teachings and practice, intercultural competency, and anti-racism 1. The Canadian health system is based on colonialist principles of health 2, where Indigenous populations experience a disproportionate burden of disease 3, discrimination and substandard health care 4. There is a need to “redevelop the healthcare system into one that is integrative and considers Indigenous people, their right to culture, to freedom, and to health” 5, this begins with culturally appropriate education/content pre-licensure. Brock University has two nursing entry-to-practice programs (BScN and BNMN), both of which must meet curricular accreditation and approval criteria 6. Nursing curriculum comprises courses with single course descriptions to meet single and specified program outcomes, demonstrated through examples of teaching and learning strategies. The present Indigenous content in the nursing curriculum is covered in multiple courses, it has not been formalized across the nursing program and lacks structure informed by an Indigenous framework. Additionally, and most importantly it lacks formalized input and perspectives from Indigenous people. While the program met accreditation standards, there is significant room for improvement. To maximize the objectives of TRC Action 24, the Indigenous curriculum content will be redesigned, employing a decolonized approach drawing from Indigenous pedagogies. Objectives: For this project, the purpose is to identify nursing/health/curricular content or resources that have been created with or informed by Indigenous perspectives and/or support Indigenous pedagogy. These findings will inform development of a nursing curricular framework responsive to the TRC calls to action related to health education and lead toward a more decolonized nursing curriculum. Much work has been done on Indigenous Pedagogies in Indigenous education and education delivery for Indigenous students 7. Decolonizing the content and delivery of nursing education is unique and will provide a framework for other health programs at Brock University.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
