Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The Composer in the Classroom (1965), Ear Cleaning: A Handbook for the Modern Music Teacher (1967), When Words Sing (1969), The Rhinoceros in the Classroom (1975). Raymond Murray Schafer is a Canadian composer, writer, musicologist, the “father” of acoustic ecology and the author of the concept of the soundscape. One of the important aspects of his many-sided activities was his contribution to music education. The opportunity for pedagogical experiments was provided by his work at Simon Fraser University (1965‒1975). Schafer’s educational theories are reflected in his books such as The Composer in the Classroom (1965), Ear Cleaning: A Handbook for the Modern Music Teacher (1967), When Words Sing (1969), and The Rhinoceros in the Classroom (1975). The article focuses on the booklet When Words Sing, which provides insight not only into the composer’s pedagogical strategies, but also his views on the interaction of words and music. The article reveals the content of Schafer’s educational course, identifies the features of his pedagogical approach based on the ideas of creativity, heuristics and synesthesia, and notes their connection with the creative practice of John Cage. Special attention is paid to the composer’s choral music, created for educational purposes. Using the example of the analysis of the compositions Epitaph for Moonlight and Snowforms, conclusions are drawn about the importance of the sound side of language for Schafer and the continuous relationship of auditory and visual aspects in his graphic notation.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
