The British Grassland Society (BGS) is very pleased to welcome all delegates to the 23 rd symposium of the European Grassland Federation (EGF) held in Reading, United Kingdom.The BGS and the EGF have a long relationship dating back to September 1963, when at the European Grassland Symposium held in Hurley, the decision was taken to form the EGF.The Proceedings of this meeting were later published by BGS as No. 1. in their Occasional Symposium series.The BGS is celebrating its 80 th Anniversary in 2025 following inauguration on 20 June 1945.It is a privilege to be hosting the 23 rd EGF symposium in this anniversary year and is a great opportunity to renew important relationships and establish new ones.Multi-species swards is enormously topical at the moment with wide ranging research investigating many aspects relating to diversity, productivity, resilience and environmental sustainability.The integration of diverse species into pasture systems offers opportunities to help address the many and varied challenges currently facing farmers, policy makers and the wider industry.There is particular interest in the potential to positively influence soil health, the environment, animal nutrition, health, and welfare, resilience to extreme weather, and the reduction in the use of purchased inputs.There are however many challenges relating to multi-species swards in successfully achieving and optimising their implementation.The 23 rd EGF symposium will address many of the factors relating to multi-species swards in relation to three key themes.These are:• Theme 1 -Agronomic considerations of multi-species swards • Theme 2 -Animal production impacts of multi-species swards • Theme 3 -Impacts of multi-species swards on the environment A key focus of the sessions will be to not only gain a deeper understanding of the research currently underway but also the real-world application of the results.During the mid-symposium tours, we invite delegates to visit the University of Reading Crop Research Unit (CRU) and Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR).These sites have been involved in work on multi-species swards undertaken at The University of Reading.We would like to thank all authors for their contributions and the large group of reviewers for their time and guidance, this support is essential to the integrity and success of the symposium.We would also like to thank the Scientific Committee, the Organising Committee, sponsors, supporters and suppliers who have contributed to the delivery, support and organisation of the symposium.Finally we wish that the 23 rd Symposium of the EGF will be a fantastic opportunity to explore and gain new insights into the area of multi-species swards as well as an opportunity to meet friends and develop new networks.
