Abstract
Ce mémoire a pour but de soulever la relation paradoxale centrale au dispositif de la série télévisée et téléréalité RuPaul’s Drag Race (LogoTV, 2009-2016 ; VH1, 2017-2022 ; MTV, 2022-présent). La série animée par RuPaul, drag queen étatsunienne connue, se présente comme un produit d’abord destiné aux communautés queer. Or, l’émission produit une tension entre ses participantes drag – une pratique queer déviant des normes – et la rigidité des règles du format de la téléréalité. L’objectif même de la téléréalité est la promesse d’atteindre un succès mainstream, au coût de devoir adhérer à une définition spécifique de la pratique drag. Certaines drag queens décident parfois de ne pas se conformer (ou n’y arrivent simplement pas). À ce moment, la marge de manoeuvre que possèdent les concurrentes affecte la rigidité du dispositif du jeu, le remettant en question. De plus, au cours des dernières années, la compétition a connu des adaptations servant de prolongement de cet idéal drag à travers d’autres marchés télévisuels. Ce projet s’attarde sur le cas de Canada’s Drag Race pour comprendre les dynamiques culturelles se superposant aux enjeux queer au Canada et au Québec.
