Abstract
Höyrylaiva Empress of Ireland rakennettiin kuljettamaan maahanmuuttajia ja muita matkustajia Pohjois-Atlantin yli Quebec Cityn ja Liverpoolin välillä. Yritys ilmoitti tarjoavansa nopeimman ja lyhimmän matkan Atlantin yli. Empress of Ireland lähti Quebec Citystä iltapäivällä 28. toukokuuta 1914. Aluksella oli 1057 matkustajaa ja 420 miehistön jäsentä. Empress of Ireland törmäsi 29. toukokuuta 1914 alkutunneilla pian lähdön jälkeen ja tiheässä sumussa norjalaisen kivihiilialustan Storstadin kanssa. Suurin osa matkustajista nukkui törmäyksen aikaan eikä heillä ollut aikaa pelastaa itseään, mutta hukkui nopeasti. 1015 ihmistä kuoli Kanadan historian pahimmassa merikatastrofissa. Eloonjääneitä oli 462, joista merkittävä osa miehistön jäseniä. Laivalla oli 93 matkustajaa Suomeen; he kaikki matkustavat kolmannessa luokassa. Vain 21 heistä selviytyi, 72 hukkui ja katosi syvissä vesissä aluksen mukana. Empress of Ireland vaipui unohdukseen, koska se upposi vain muutama kuukausi ennen ensimmäisen maailmansodan puhkeamista, ja ihmiset olivat kääntäneet huomionsa muualle.
