Yksi keskeinen aikakautemme piirre on lisääntyvä työvoiman liikkuvuus sekä liikkuvuuden vaatimukset niin kansallisesti kuin kansainvälisestikin. EU-jäsenyyden jälkeen ulkomaille on muuttanut noin 47 000 korkeasti koulutettua Suomen kansalaista. Paluumuuttaneita, korkeakoulututkinnon suorittaneita Suomen kansalaisia on tällä ajanjaksolla ollut hieman vähemmän, 32 000. Työvoiman vapaata liikkuvuutta Euroopassa on perusteltu erityisesti taloudellisilla syillä; työmarkkinoiden joustavuuden parantamisella ja korkeammalla tuottavuudella. Vapaa liikkuvuus ja työmarkkinoiden joustavuuden kasvu nähdään Euroopan kilpailuvaltteina. Tässä julkaisussa podimme erilaisia työmarkkinoiden siirtymiä ja joustavuusilmiöitä, niiden ilmenemismuotoja ja eritasoisia merkityksiä. Spatiaalinen kansalaisuus Euroopan työmarkkinoilla -hanke kokosi yhteen yhteiskuntatieteiden ja oikeustieteiden tutkijoita tarkastelemaan rajat ylittävää liikkuvuutta sekä sen vaikutusta työelämään, työntekijöiden oikeuksiin sekä ulkomailla työskentelevien ihmisten elämänpiiriin. Hanke oli osa Suomen Akatemian Työn ja hyvinvoinnin tulevaisuus -tutkimusohjelmaa (WORK 2008–2011). Tutkimushankkeessa paneuduttiin hyvinvoinnin, työn ja muiden elämänpiirien muuttuviin suhteisiin tarkastelemalla kolmea työn perässä liikkuvaa ryhmää: Suomesta töitä hakevia maahanmuuttajia, korkeasti koulutettuja suomalaisia, jotka muuttavat Euroopan Unionin sisällä sekä Intiaan työkomennukselle lähetettyjä, etuoikeutettuja muuttajia.
