Abstract
After the destructive earthquakes of the February 6th, 2023, an on-site mission organized by the French Association of Earthquake Engineering (AFPS), took place in southern Turkiye involving eleven French experts representing different institutions and organizations. The post-seismic campaign lasted from March, 31st to April, 9th 2023, when the group visited many sites presenting different damage levels, all located in the epicentral areas of the two mainshocks of the sequence. The main objective of this presentation is to highlight the contribution of in-situ dynamic measurements in understanding some observed phenomena. In particular, ambient vibrations were carried out in free-field and in some civil engineering structures. These measurements of dynamic parameters of the monitored soils and structures help to explain the variability and amplification of the two earthquakes ground motions, as well as their impact on buildings and other large-scale engineering structures, such as bridges, dams and cultural heritage. Regarding soil dynamics, they allow to assess the existence of lithological site effects in some of the urban areas heavily affected by the two mainshocks and the aftershock sequence (Çukurova quarter in Adana, Kirikhan, Islahiye and Antakya). Regarding the structures, several historical buildings (Clock Tower and Great Mosquee in the city center of Adana) and the ancient Misis bridge have been studied to understand their dynamical behavior by Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). During the visit to the large-scale arch-dam of Berke (50 km north of Osmaniye) where OMA has been carried out, a ML3.3 aftershock has been recorded by the three stations. Careful signal analysis allows the comparison of the dynamic response of the arch-dam under ambient vibrations, but also moderate seismic motion. A comparison with a previous OMA study of the same dam carried by Bayraktar et al. (2011) allows to discuss the observed frequency variations. These analysis highlight the benefits to carry out dynamic measurements that become complementary to visual and photography-based site investigations during post-seismic campaigns in lightly to moderately damaged areas.
