The size and proportion of VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) travelers to Korea: 2009-2024

Abstract

이 연구는 그동안 간과되어 온 방한 친구·친지 방문(VFR: visiting friends and relatives) 여행의 규모, 비중, 장기 성장 추세를 분석하였다. 방한 외래관광객통계의 총입국자 수와 외래관광객조사(2009~2019, 2023~2024)에서 산출한 집단별 비율을 결합하여 연도별 VFR 방문자 수를 추정하였다. 분석 결과는 세 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, VFR 방문자는 2024년 약 220만 명으로 전체 외래 방문자의 14.5%를 차지하였으며, 이는 비즈니스 방문과 유사한 규모였다. 둘째, VFR 방문은 2009년부터 2024년까지 두 배 이상 증가했으며, 팬데믹 이전 연평균 성장률(CAGR)은 8.9%로 여가 다음으로 높았다. 또한 팬데믹 이후에는 여가 및 비즈니스 여행보다 더 빠른 회복세를 보였다. 셋째, 방문 목적과 숙박 유형을 결합한 복합 기준을 적용해 VFR을 정의할 경우, 목적 단일 기준만 적용할 때보다 VFR 비중이 평균 3.3%포인트 높게 나타나 기존 통계로 포착하지 못하는 숨은 VFR 규모가 드러났다. 이러한 결과는 VFR 방문이 주변부가 아니라 한국 외래 관광의 핵심이자 성장하는 한 축임을 보여준다. 따라서, 한국 외래 관광 발전을 위해 VFR의 역할을 재평가하고 그에 맞춘 정책과 마케팅 전략을 수립하고 시행할 필요가 있다. 방법론적으로 이 연구는 집단별 외래방문자 규모를 추정하기 위한 투명하고 재현 가능한 방법을 제시함으로써, 후속 연구에서 다른 유형 외래방문자 규모를 추정하거나 그 계절성, 변동성, 경제적 기여 분석을 할 수 있는 토대를 제공했다는 의의가 있다.
