Psychological stress has widespread effects on the human body and, if not properly regulated, can significantly impair both physical and mental health. Therefore, understanding the underlying mechanisms of stress is critical for developing effective strategies for managing stress and preventing related diseases. Recent neuroimaging studies have employed the Montreal Imaging Stress Task (MIST), which uses social evaluative threat and arithmetic task performance under time pressure to elicit psychological stress. This pilot study (n = 9, all participants male) uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to infer on the neural underpinnings associated with psychological stress during MIST performance. During the MIST, participants were asked to perform arithmetic calculations at three different difficulty levels. First results indicate that the temporoparietal junction (TPJ), and the associated processes of mentalizing and theory of mind, play an important role in the processing of psychological stress, a finding not frequently reported in previous literature. Additionally, increased arithmetic task difficulty during psychological stress increases activation in brain regions related to goal-directed task performance, including visual, attentional and motor control areas, as well as regions implicated in social and affective processing. These findings suggest that increasing arithmetic task difficulty may enhance the MIST’s effectiveness to elicit psychological stress.
