Abstract
If there is any benefit to global trade disruption and a metaphorical shuffling of the deck with trade relations between countries and trading blocs it is that it presents new opportunities for manufacturers to reach new markets either out of opportunity or necessity. For Many manufactures, selling products in the European Union can appear to be a maze of difficult to understand legislative documents, terminology and obligations for Ex products. There are certainly some elements and terms which make the EU conformity system an esoteric concept which for many makes it daunting to explore sales opportunities. It is also true that the philosophy to conformity assessment in the EU market is vastly different to almost any other national or international certification scheme. It places the sole responsibility of conformity assessment on the manufacturer “Conformity assessment should therefore remain solely the obligation of the manufacturer”-2014/34/EU (13) which, at first, can appear onerous however it the document allows manufacturers flexibility and freedom in ways that no other certification scheme allows. For Example, Most Ex equipment (e.g. category 3/Zone 2 or most non electrical equipment) in the EU does not require the involvement of a notified body! Behind the obscurity of the directive and scheme documents is an incredibly simple path to a massive open market that should not strike fear into any manufacturer and should instead invite gratitude for the flexibility it offers for anyone willing to spend some time to learn how to navigate the system.
