Cet article propose une revue de la littérature en sciences sociales relative à l’acceptabilité de la méthanisation agricole, en analysant le cas français à l’aune d’une mise en perspective européenne. Fondée sur la valorisation de résidus agricoles, cette technologie soulève des interrogations du fait des transformations qu’elle induit dans les agrosystèmes et les territoires ruraux. Notre état des lieux s’appuie sur un protocole systématique, croisant littérature francophone et anglophone, à partir de 16 bases de données, débouchant sur un corpus de 37 articles. Un premier résultat significatif tient à l’imbrication concrète entre trois dimensions d’acceptabilité caractérisant les projets de méthanisation : (i) sociale, où il s’agit de dépasser la grille du Nimby ; (ii) territoriale, qui met en évidence l’importance à la fois des variables spatiales, de la gouvernance locale et des enjeux de justice dans l’acceptation ou le rejet des projets ; et (iii) professionnelle, qui donne à voir des recompositions internes au monde agricole, révélant une hiérarchisation implicite des profils d’agriculteurs. Deuxièmement, les débats autour des cultures énergétiques et des usages concurrentiels des sols apparaissent comme des points d’attention majeurs, qui singularisent plus encore les enjeux de la méthanisation agricole par rapport aux questionnements d’acceptabilité connus pour d’autres énergies renouvelables.
