Abstract
Cet article explore la couverture médiatique différenciée et les réactions communautaires suscitées par le décès énigmatique d’Yvonne Le Maître, figure marquante du journalisme franco-américain. Retrouvée morte à Plum Island en mai 1954, Le Maître fait l’objet de récits variés dans la presse américaine, franco-américaine et canadienne. Par une approche alliant analyse du discours et sociolinguistique, l’étude met en lumière les stratégies narratives propres à chaque sphère médiatique. Tandis que la presse américaine privilégie une restitution factuelle – parfois teintée de spéculation – la presse franco-américaine s’attache à préserver l’honneur de la défunte, soulignant son rôle essentiel dans la communauté. La presse canadienne, plus distante, reprend en partie les éléments diffusés par ses homologues américains et franco-américains. L’article accorde une attention particulière aux hommages publiés dans Le Travailleur , qui consacre plus de vingt textes à la mémoire de la journaliste. Par ces publications, une figure légendaire se construit, alliant mystère personnel et rayonnement intellectuel. Cette dynamique révèle des tensions identitaires et mémorielles au sein de la diaspora franco-américaine, et interroge les mécanismes par lesquels une communauté minoritaire façonne le souvenir de ses figures marquantes. La mort d’Yvonne Le Maître devient ainsi un révélateur des rapports entre médias, mémoire et identité.
