L'ouvrage s'ouvre sur une longue citation des Mtamorphes d'Ovide, o Byblis prise de son frre dteste les noms qu'ils tiennent du sang et prfre tre nomme par lui Byblis que d'tre appele sa soeur La littrature tmoigne de l'inceste par des vocations d'une extrme varit, c'est son examen que Bernard Vernier nous invite.Dans ses propos introductifs, l'auteur prcise son projet : c'est une critique, parfois rude, de la thse de Franoise Hritier d'un inceste du deuxime type, labore dans son livre Les deux soeurs et leur mre 1 .L a dmarche a le mrite d'tre clairement nonce : Il apparat que la notion d'inceste du deuxime type n'apparat dans aucune des socits dont les lgendes ou les codes juridiques sont analyss [elle] est le produit artificiel d'une construction d'objet particulire dont le principal dfaut est sa dngation des rapports sociaux. L'ouvrage propose une lecture des diffrents textes examins par F. Hritier.
