Snailfishes (Cottoidei: Liparidae) from the Gully submarine canyon, western North Atlantic, with descriptions of two new species in Paraliparis and Psednos
Bibliographic record
Abstract
At least three species of pelagic liparids are present in the Gully, a submarine canyon and Marine Protected Area. Paraliparis copei Goode et Bean, 1896 is resident at mesopelagic depths near the head of the canyon. One specimen collected in the same vicinity does not conform with any known species and is here described as Paraliparis nelsoni sp. nov.—a species with vertebrae 63, dorsal-fin rays 56, anal-fin rays 53, and a peculiar pectoral fin with 15 rays, the upper lobe (12 + 1 rays) at the mid-line of the body but the lower lobe (two rays) completely isolated and ventral, below the middle of the postocular distance. The specimen's predorsal length almost equals its precaudal length, its teeth sit densely in numerous oblique rows, while its gill opening reaches to the level of the fourth pectoral-fin ray. Additionally, a specimen of Psednos Barnard, 1927 collected near the canyon's mouth has unique characteristics (vertebrae 43, dorsal-fin rays 38, anal-fin rays 34, pectoral-fin rays 14, with two in notch and lower lobe shorter than upper lobe, mouth terminal at 45° to horizontal, gill slit 1.2 longer than eye, opercular bone elongate). It is here described as Psednos gulliensis sp. nov.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
