Abstract
Abstract This article is a series of curatorial reflections on the contemporary artworks and art practices of four Canadian artists of Muslim background: Ali Kazimi, Faisal Anwar, Jamelie Hassan, and Fareena Chanda. All four artists exhibited work in Transformations: Enlightenment in a Digital Age , a 2016 exhibition that explored the affordances of digital and new media arts to interrogate existential questions. Drawing on artist-testimony and a close visual analysis of the artists’ digital and new media works, this article demonstrates how the artists, the curatorial framing of their art, and its presentation in community settings productively resist identity-based interpretations of their art and practice while critically responding to long-standing racist and Islamophobic discourses that are paradoxically also being circulated by digital media.
