Abstract
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) calls for expanding and enhancing area-based conservation efforts, including through Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) and landscape scale management to deliver biodiversity outcomes. In Australia, where much biodiversity exists outside formally protected areas, voluntary private land conservation plays a critical role. Yet, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of these initiatives remains scarce. This research protocol outlines a multiple-method, longitudinal study designed to evaluate the ecological and social outcomes of voluntary conservation interventions on private lands. We focus on three intervention types: (1) non-binding area-based conservation programs, (2) citizen science and ecological engagement initiatives, and (3) a combination of both. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the concept of ‘noticing nature,’ the study assesses how interventions influence landholder intentions, behaviours, and ecological change over time. Data collection includes annual surveys, ecological site assessments, and walk-along interviews conducted over a three-year period. The protocol details our approach to sampling, data integration, and analysis, including path regression and inductive thematic analysis of qualitative data. This research seeks to determine whether combining conservation participation with engagement and monitoring activities results in stronger environmental stewardship and measurable biodiversity improvements. this study contributes to growing global efforts to design more relational, inclusive, and effective conservation strategies by identifying the mechanisms that drive behaviour change that deliver positive social and ecological outcomes. This protocol offers a replicable and adaptable framework for evaluating biodiversity outcomes from voluntary conservation actions in diverse landscapes worldwide.
