Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The author have gathered 14 epigraphic and literary evidences about the Aeolians and Aeolic language on Bosporus, mainly on Taman (pen)insula, where they have founded Hermonassa – only one materially real Aeolic colony in Pontic area (§ 1: Catalogue). Among the literary evidences there are 5 with extension α > αι, which is characteristic feature of Lesbian subdialect. The most important of them are the forms Φαιναγόρεια, Φαιναγόρας by Dionysius Periegeta, Arrianus, Eustathius Thessalonicensis in the tales on Phanagoreia and Hermonassa foundation. It means that they have borrowed reports from certain Lesbian historian. Eustathius gives two reports on this subject, the one states Ionic origin of Phanagoreia and Hermonassa, the second is quotation from Arrianus and tells about Aeolic colonists–founders of Hermonassa. This contradiction indicates, that Eustathius and Arrianus have used works written by two different Lesbian historians (§ 2: textual criticism of the literary sources). The author investigates the historical obstacles of Hermonassa and Phanagoreia foundation soon after 546 BC (§ 3). Then follow the supplementary paragraphs 4–5, where the author have investigated two graffiti, one from Phanagoreia of the third quarter VI century BC with name Panagor(es), the second from Panticapaion of V century BC with name Semandros, which has memorial character after Hermonassa founder. In the last § 6 the author have discussed a question of historical value of a mythological background tradition about Teos, Hermonassa and Pantikapaion foundations and have agreed with D. Braund, that they may contain a certain grain of historical truth.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
