Formas Emergentes de infección por Orthoreovirus aviares en pavos en Quebec, Canadá, asociadas con tenosinovitis, hepatitis y encefalitis (entre los años 2020-2022). Desde el año 2011, han surgido nuevas cepas de orthoreovirus aviar en pavos comerciales en Norteamérica, caracterizadas principalmente por tenosinovitis y, en raras ocasiones, por hepatitis necrosante en aves jóvenes. En el año 2020, se diagnosticaron infecciones por orthoreovirus en parvadas de pavos por primera vez en Quebec, lo que ocasionó importantes pérdidas económicas tanto en pavipollos jóvenes como en pavos mayores. En la necropsia, las aves mayores presentaron tenosinovitis linfoplasmocítica, ocasionalmente asociada con rotura aórtica. En los pavipollos jóvenes, las lesiones se caracterizaron principalmente por focos necróticos hepatocelulares y hepatocitos sincitiales degenerados. Algunos pavipollos de 31 y 69 días de edad presentaron ataxia y temblores, además de una encefalitis no supurativa que afectó al cerebelo y la protuberancia anular. Un nuevo protocolo de inmunohistoquímica demostró con éxito la presencia del virus en las lesiones pulmonares, hepáticas y esplénicas de aves con hepatitis. Estos pavitos con hepatitis presentaron la carga viral más alta (valor de ciclo umbral [Ct] promedio mediante PCR cuantitativa con transcriptasa inversa [RT-qPCR] de 11.56 ± 2.16) en comparación con los casos de tenosinovitis (23.54 ± 3.77) y encefalitis (22.4 y 33.1; P < 0.0001). Se obtuvieron secuencias completas del genoma (WGS) de todos los segmentos del ARN reoviral (n = 10) de 14 aislados de ortoreovirus del pavo, incluyendo un aislado vinculado a encefalitis. En general, se identificaron al menos cuatro cepas diferentes según su perfil de reordenamiento (PR), lo que ilustra la alta variabilidad genómica del virus. Sin embargo, ningún perfil de reordenamiento pudo asociarse con un patotipo viral específico. En conclusión, diferentes cepas de ortoreovirus aviar se están propagando en las parvadas de pavos de Norteamérica, asociadas con múltiples síndromes patológicos, como tenosinovitis, hepatitis y encefalitis.
