本研究では小ギクへの中性子線照射によって誘発される突然変異の表現型の種類と発生率および照射後の生存率などの生育特性を調査し,中性子線照射による突然変異育種の有効性を明らかにすることを目的とした.供試した3つの品種および系統における中性子線照射後の腋芽の発芽率を調査した結果,発芽率の半減線量は‘17c02’は11.10~16.65 Gy,‘18c22’および‘常陸サマーライト’は5.55~11.10 Gyであった.また,照射後の伸長が著しく阻害される弱勢個体が見られ,‘17c02’および‘18c22’は11.10 Gy以上,‘常陸サマーライト’は16.65 Gy以上において,発芽したすべての個体が弱勢個体であった.照射個体は供試した品種および系統により出現する変異の種類の傾向が異なっており,花色が赤色の‘17c02’からは花色変異体が138個体得られたが,白色の‘18c22’からは花色変異体は得られず,黄色の‘常陸サマーライト’からは色が薄くなった個体が7個体得られ,赤品種の花色変異スペクトルが広いことが示された.また,‘常陸サマーライト’からは,葉および草姿変異体として白色化した側芽や,葉が斑入り状となる個体などが得られ,これらの変異は他の2系統からは得られない特徴的なものであった.花形の変異としては,供試した3つの品種および系統とも奇形花や花の小型化が確認され,品種間差は少ないことが示唆された.また,照射後の腋芽からの発芽個体の割合が92%以上と高かった低線量条件においても変異体の発生率が5.0~16.0%と高く,ガンマ線等の低LET変異原と比較して,障害等の少ない有用な変異体を獲得することが可能と考えられた.
