Este artículo compara tipos de narrativa disímiles, pero que coinciden en estar basadas en eventos reales. Tal como el periódico informa de sucesos acontecidos el día anterior, con mucha frecuencia una de las funciones de los corridos es realizar una tarea informativa semejante. A pesar de este elemento en común, ambos tipos de narrativas –la del periodismo, como el reportaje o la crónica, por un lado, y la de los corridos, por el otro– emplean una retórica particular adecuada tanto al medio como al objetivo social de la comunicación. En el verano de 1974, el narcotraficante Fred Carrasco protagonizó una toma de rehenes e intento de fuga en la prisión estatal de Huntsville, Texas, en donde purgaba una condena a cadena perpetua. El episodio conjuró una gran atención mediática, aunque hubiese acaparado más de no haber coincidido con el caso Watergate. Paralelamente al seguimiento noticioso en los medios, a la mañana siguiente ya se escuchaba en la radio de San Antonio, un corrido narrando los hechos. Este artículo analiza comparativamente los elementos principales en la construcción del personaje en el corpus de corridos seleccionado y en la prensa anglosajona, en particular.
