Abstract
Essee rekonstruoi viestinnän teorian dialogis-dialektisena tutkimusalana, joka nojaa kahteen periaatteeseen: konstitutiiviseen viestintämalliin metamallina ja näkemykseen teoriasta metadiskursiivisena käytäntönä. Essee väittää, että kaikki viestinnän teoriat ovat vastavuoroisesti relevantteja, kun niitä sovelletaan käytännön elämismaailmaan, jossa “viestintä” jo sanana on monin tavoin merkityksellinen. Kaikki viestinnän teorioiden traditiot ovat lähtöisin jostakin arkisesta viestintää koskevasta uskomuksesta ja nojautuvat siihen samalla kun haastavat muita vastaavia uskomuksia. Kun traditiot täydentävät ja haastavat toisiaan, se tuottaa teoreettisen metadiskurssin, joka läpäisee ja mahdollisesti valaisee käytännöllistä metadiskurssia yhteiskunnassa. Tässä ehdotetussa tutkimusalan mallissa viestinnän teorian retorisen, semioottisen, fenomenologisen, sosiopsykologisen, sosiokulttuurisen ja kriittisen tradition erottaa toisistaan niiden ominaiset tavat määritellä viestintä ja viestinnän ongelmat, niiden metadiskursiiviset sanastot sekä metadiskursiiviset oletukset, joihin jokainen traditio vetoaa ja joita se haastaa. Esseessä ehdotetaan topoita teorioiden väliseen keskusteluun. Lisäksi arvioidaan seurauksia alan teoretisoinnille ja tieteelliselle käytännölle.
