Abstract
O professor Francisco Gomes de Matos obteve o título de mestre em Letras pela Universidade de Michigan (1960) e o de doutor em Linguística Aplicada ao Ensino de Línguas pela PUC - SP (1973). Foi docente nesta universidade e na UFPE, entre outras. Lecionou no Museu Antropológico do México, na Universidade de Ottawa e na Universidade de Georgia (Athens). De 1966 a 1979, foi Diretor do Centro de Linguística Aplicada e Diretor Pedagógico do Instituto de Idiomas Yázigi. Já em 1975 associava ensino de inglês com abordagem ecológica. É cofundador da Associação Brasileira de Linguística (ABRALIN). Integrou sua primeira diretoria, como secretário, além de ter sido seu presidente no biênio 1981- 1983. Lutou muito pelos direitos linguísticos das pessoas, tendo publicado o artigo “Por uma Declaração de Direitos Linguísticos Individuais”, na Revista Cultura Vozes, 1978. Tem atuado em prol de uma “linguística da paz” e uma “paz comunicativa”. Autor de apelo pioneiro em favor de uma Declaração Universal de Direitos Linguísticos (1984). Conferencista de abertura do Congresso Mundial de Linguística Aplicada (AILA), Bruxelas, 1984. No que tange à ecolinguística especificamente, publicou “A case for an ecolinguistic identity” no Boletim da FIPLV, disponível em www.fiplv.org/news42htm (1998), com o que ele foi um dos primeiros a usar a palavra “ecolinguística” no Brasil. Esse texto saiu em tradução portuguesa em ECO-REBEL v. 1, n. 1, 2015. Em 1996, ele já publicara o livro Pedagogia da positividade: comunicação construtiva em português (Recife: EdEPE). Na seção "Linguística e Educação Ambiental", do livro Comunicar para o bem: Rumo à paz comunicativa (São Paulo: Editora Ave-Maria, 2002), associa língua e meio ambiente explicitamente e chega a conceituar ecolinguística. Cofundador de PILEI (Programa Interamericano de Lingüística y Enseñanza de Idiomas), ABRALIN, ALAB, World Dignity University Initiative e ABA Global Education (Recife). Atualmente, é Professor Emérito da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. A famosa conferência de Halliday, “New ways of meaning: The challenge to applied linguistics”, proferida no encontro da AILA em Tessalônica em 1990 (reproduzida como artigo e diversos capítulos de livros) começa mencio nando o nome de Gomes de Matos.
