Esta dissertação propõe uma análise da elaboração da figura de Camilo Castelo Branco composta no livro Fanny Owen, de Agustina Bessa-Luís, publicado em 1979. Pretendemos investigar na obra da autora, de que modo a personagem criada a partir de uma história verídica e do jogo intertextual com narrativas de Camilo Castelo Branco, é trabalhada e reinterpretada a fim de se propor uma nova perspectiva dos fatos. Para tanto, busca-se demonstrar como acontece a ficcionalização da História nesta obra agustiniana a partir de recursos da metaficção historiográfica estabelecidos pela ensaísta canadense Linda Hutcheon (1990). A partir de estudos sobre as semelhanças literárias entre Agustina Bessa-Luís e Camilo Castelo Branco é possível observar como a vida e obra do romancista exerceram imenso fascínio sobre a escritora portuguesa. Nesse caso, o propósito desta dissertação é compreender como Agustina Bessa-Luís utiliza-se de mecanismos estéticos em sua narrativa para reescrever acontecimentos históricos a partir de um diálogo constante entre história e ficção. Por fim, a base teórica para a realização desta pesquisa inclui os estudos de Maria de Fátima Marinho (1998) acerca do romance histórico em Portugal e a respeito da intertextualidade, Júlia Kristeva (2005) e Tiphaine Samoyault (2008).
