En este trabajo se realiza un estudio de las ciudades del Bajo Guadalquivir, con especial atención a Sevilla, en el proceso de transición entre la Antigüedad Tardía y la Edad Media Islámica. Es bien conocida la extensa red urbana que existió en este ámbito geográfico durante el periodo romano imperial; sin embargo, durante la Tardoantigüedad y, especialmente, durante la Alta Edad Media, se atestigua una importante contracción en el número de ciudades activas. En este trabajo pretendemos no solo mostrar los diferentes procesos que afectaron a cada uno de los núcleos estudiados, sino también tratar de dar respuesta a los factores que determinaron el abandono o continuidad de estas ciudades, para finalmente aportar una visión general del proceso. Para ello, llevamos a cabo un análisis a diferentes escalas que nos permite realizar comparaciones y detectar la existencia de procesos comunes determinantes, como puede ser la influencia del río, o individualizados, con muy diversas casuísticas. Tratamos en primer lugar las urbes conocidas de la cuenca hidrográfica del Bajo Guadalquivir, y en el segundo lugar, a modo monográfico, el caso de Sevilla, la ciudad cabecera de este territorio.
