Abstract
Sobre el poeta nicaragüense Rubén Darío se ha escrito profusamente en su condición de fundador mayor del movimiento modernista americano. Menos quizá, y eso es lo que busca desarrollar este artículo, sobre el Darío intelectual de fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, su papel y contexto, así como las condiciones, circunstancias y contradicciones que rodearon su figura. Nuestro interés es ubicarlo como un intelectual que constituyó un “punto de condensación” social, cultural, político, de ese período de transición finisecular. Más que como un poeta nicaragüense, Darío fue adoptado como figura preeminente por diversos países, desde Guatemala hasta Chile y Argentina, y él era muy consciente de ello. Junto con una nueva manera de concebir la escritura literaria, Darío estableció un estilo de actuar, una manera de relacionar las letras con la institucionalidad del poder, con la diplomacia, con los centros intelectuales. Ese es el Darío que aquí nos interesa, aquel que funciona como espejo, para trazar la figura del intelectual latinoamericano y sus nuevas condiciones y características, como nuevo punto de condensación de los intelectuales en el paso del siglo XX al XXI.
