Abstract
Dans le contexte de crise du logement qui frappe les métropoles brésiliennes et de gentrification accélérée de la zone portuaire de Rio de Janeiro, cette chronique examine les stratégies d’hospitalité développées par le collectif de l’Ocupação Vito Giannotti (OVG) pour légitimer leur présence urbaine et construire leur appartenance territoriale. Depuis huit ans, ce groupe de familles sans-toit occupe un ancien motel abandonné dans le centre-ville, déployant des initiatives d’hospitalité tant à l’intérieur qu’à l’extérieur du squat. À l’intérieur, ces pratiques visent à transformer l’édifice en ruines en un espace d’habitation accueillant et fonctionnel. À l’extérieur, elles cherchent à renverser les dynamiques d’exclusion en positionnant paradoxalement les occupants comme offreurs d’hospitalité envers un quartier initialement hostile à leur présence. Appuyée sur une démarche d’observation participante, cette ethnographie révèle comment l’auto-construction de l’hospitalité par les marginalisés urbains opère sur un double registre : la construction matérielle et sociale d’un espace d’accueil à l’intérieur du squat et la production active d’une offre d’hospitalité dirigée vers l’extérieur. Cette double dimension constitue une innovation sociale significative qui interroge les modalités traditionnelles d’inclusion dans la ville.
