La plateforme de recommandation culturelle SensCritique est née de la promesse explicite de faire découvrir à ses utilisateurs des oeuvres culturelles méconnues, des « perles » rares susceptibles de leur avoir échappé. Cet article propose de questionner cette ambition en examinant la visibilité des livres sur SensCritique en fonction de deux critères : leur genre littéraire et le volume de production de leur éditeur. Nous avons pour cela divisé notre travail en deux temps : une analyse quantitative approfondie du succès quantitatif (nombre d’interactions) et qualitatif (note moyenne) de 9766 livres issus de la base de données de SensCritique (tous publiés en 2021) et une observation du site web de la plateforme (son design, ses systèmes de recommandation). Nos résultats soulignent la coexistence d’un effet vedettariat – caractérisé par le haut niveau de visibilité et d’attention accordé aux ouvrages déjà très médiatisés et/ou très vendus, notamment pour des raisons de design du site – et d’une logique relativement marginale de visibilisation d’ouvrages en voie de légitimation culturelle.
