Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

With Ornament and Symbol in French Romantic Architecture, Ralph Ghoche has produced a crucial study devoted to the work of a forgotten nineteenth-century French architect, Simon-Claude Constant-Dufeux (1801–1871). Although his built work is modest, consisting notably of an addition to the École de Dessin in Paris, minor interventions at the Panthéon, a façade of the Church of Saint-Laurent, and numerous tombs, Ghoche demonstrates the intellectual reach of an architect long overshadowed by contemporaries such as Henri Labrouste and Félix Duban. Based on his doctoral thesis, the book draws on extensive archival research. Ghoche consulted numerous unpublished documents and reproduced a large body of little-known images and preparatory studies. His aim is to show that Constant-Dufeux was a key theorist of French architectural Romanticism. By foregrounding ornamentation, the book reveals how the architect sought to renew architecture by uniting painting, sculpture and architecture, notably in the context of the emerging néo-Grec style. Ghoche challenges the idea that nineteenth-century ornament represented a retreat from modernity, presenting instead decorative and symbolic programmes as a critical and progressive response to the values of an industrial and urban world.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
